SIXTY-ONE THINGS

Sharon's Artwork

In 2019 Sharon attended a workshop designed to teach authors how to break through “writer’s block” using different painting styles. Sharon had never done any kind of painting or drawing and was so intimidated by the thought of the course that she very nearly didn’t go at all. To her surprise the day was not only enjoyable, but inspiring. Over the next few months, she honed her style and skills by learning from others, (isn’t YouTube a wonderful resource?) and intentionally spending time with the Lord while painting. It soon became clear that the beauty of “uncontrolled” watercolour was where Sharon would land.

One of the delights of watercolour is that it can utterly surprise you with the route it decides to take. Of course, you can be in control to some extent, but Sharon has learned to let go and, as the saying goes, let God! The first step of each painting is prayer. Sharon asks the Lord to lead her as she paints and chooses the colour palette.

Occasionally a commission customer has a colour palette in mind, but often Sharon creates one according to how she feels led. And then comes the wetting of the paper, (Sharon usually creates wet on wet watercolour) and so ensues the exciting bit… on goes the paint!

Each uniquely individual painting takes a couple of days to complete because the foundational layer of watercolour paint must be completely dry before adding the ink abstract illustrations. The shapes created by the watercolour bloom lead Sharon as she imagines abstract plants, flowers, and forms. After the piece is illustrated, Sharon goes back in again and adds more colour and some metallic ink to the places that seem to need it. The final step is to add the words (although some paintings don’t have any script added.)

You will notice that there is almost always white space in Sharon’s pieces. The space is an intentional step to symbolically leave space for God to speak in and through the finished work.
